The report also calls on the Office Personnel Management, the Office of Budget and Management, and Congress to fund, structure and carry out AI training to accommodate the coming sea change. 2019 More than Meets AI II: Building Trust, Managing RiskThis white paper outlines key enterprise risks to AI adoption, including cybersecurity, transparency requirements, employee knowledge, and federal budget and procurement processes. A case study examining the Canadian government’s frameworks for responsible AI adoption offers federal leaders a roadmap for navigating these risks. 2019 AI Leadership Training for Senior ExecutivesThe AI Federal Leadership Program prepares a cohort of senior leaders across government to guide their agencies’ AI strategy. The program educates agency decision-makers on the opportunities around AI, highlights best practices for developing AI solutions and prepares leaders to incorporate AI technology to better serve the public. 20202020 Cracking the Code: Harnessing the Exponential Power of TechnologyThe Partnership shows how government can use AI, immersive technologies and edge computing to modernize and transform how agencies work. The report offers tips for navigating the challenges of adopting AI alongside case studies of “AI in action” at the Office of Personnel Management, the Census Bureau, and the departments of Health and Human Services and Veterans Affairs. 2020 Into the Storm: Using Artificial Intelligence to Improve California’s Disaster ResilienceThe Partnership investigates how federal, state and local government entities across California use AI to improve disaster resilience. The white paper examines programs that apply AI to predict future disasters, assess disaster impacts, identify disasters in real-time and evaluate the damage they cause. It also explores how Los Angeles and its neighboring counties use AI software to predict the path and extent of wildfires. 2020 Highlighting Agency Best PracticesThe Partnership shares best practices from three agencies—the U.S. Marine Corps and the departments of Health and Human Services and Homeland Security—that implemented new AI technology to improve their internal operations and better serve the public. 20212021 Expanding the AI Federal Leadership ProgramThe AI Federal Leadership Program expands to two cohorts, with a virtual option to accommodate federal leaders across the country. In March 2021, the program pilots a regional cohort model to serve West Coast federal leaders, followed by a regional cohort in the Southeast, with in-person sessions in Atlanta, Georgia. Heyman Service to America Medals® Program recognizes the use of AI and intelligent automation at the Department of Labor to improve federal services and agency operations in areas ranging from procurement to human resources. Read more here. 2022 In the Public AI: How Governments Can Apply Responsible AI Principles to Artificial Intelligence for Public Service DeliveryThe Partnership offers recommendations for nontechnical government leaders to incorporate AI tools into their work. Two companion reports build on these recommendations, offering guiding questions to help leaders make decisions about the suitability of an AI tool and outlining the data, talent and governance issues to consider as agencies select, buy, build, implement and monitor AI. 20232023 Working With Agencies to Manage AI RisksThe Partnership holds a working session with leaders from the Government Accountability Office and the IRS focused on applying enterprise risk management practices to federal agencies’ AI efforts. Participants discuss the GAO’s 2021 AI Accountability Framework and the National Institute of Standards and Technology’s AI Risk Management Framework. 2023 Informing AI Guidelines in GovernmentThe Partnership files comments on the Office of Management and Budget’s proposed guidelines around the use of AI in government. The Partnership recommends OMB include distinct strategic human capital strategies to ensure the government is equipped with a workforce that can effectively use AI for the public good. A follow-up blog post recommends workforce strategies for implementing the Biden administration’s executive order on AI. 20242024 Statements to CongressThe Partnership submits two letters of record to House and Senate committees that are conducting hearings on building an AI-ready workforce and using AI to improve the customer experience. Recommendations focus on how to recruit and hire top AI talent, prioritize safe and efficient data collection, establish governance structures for coordinating AI and customer experience efforts, and more. 2024 Hosting the Senior Executive Leadership SummitThe Partnership cohosts the 2024 Senior Executive Leadership Summit, which features sessions on the importance of equipping federal employees to effectively and safely use AI, and the change management and risk mitigation strategies agencies should employ when adopting it. 2024 Announcing the AI Center for GovernmentThe Partnership receives $10M from Google.org to launch the AI Center for Government. Read more here. 2024 Responsible AI Federal Roundtable Series LaunchesThe Partnership hosts a roundtable series with federal leaders to address various topics regarding AI in government, including using artificial intelligence to improve health outcomes, enhance the customer experience and streamline federal HR operations. Explore the series. 2024 Gaining Real-Time Insights on AIThe Partnership surveys federal leaders—hailing from eight career fields, 19 agencies and 30 office subcomponents—about how they use AI. Respondents note that AI has the potential to improve public services and share that agencies need additional leadership, strategies and resources to effectively implement AI programs. 2024 The AI Federal Leadership Program Continues to GrowIn fall 2024, 140 people enroll in the program. Collectively, they oversee $215 billion of the federal budget and more than 27,000 federal employees.
