Partnership for Public Service AI Use Policy and Guidelines

We’re regularly asked how we think about generative AI use internally at the Partnership for Public Service. In response, we’re delighted to share the generative AI policy we developed to guide our organizational practice. This policy was informed by AI usage policies and guidelines from non-profit organizations like the Emerson Collective, the Center for Democracy and Technology, the MacArthur Foundation and the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation. 

Our AI use policy

The Partnership recognizes its responsibility to understand the impact of artificial intelligence, particularly generative AI, on our work, our staff, our constituents and on society more broadly. As we incorporate AI into our work, we want to use automated or generative tools in ways consistent with our values as an organization. As such, we encourage the safe and innovative use of AI to further our mission and increase our capacity to affect change. 

While embracing the use of AI in accordance with current organizationally-approved tools and guidelines, the Partnership remains committed to being a people-centric organization and wants to ensure we use generative AI to support employees doing their jobs, not to replace them. Accordingly, we do not require employees to use generative AI to complete their work.  

The Partnership has established an internal AI Use Committee to serve as a leadership and consulting body for all matters concerning internal use of AI and generative AI. The AI Use Committee evaluates the terms and security of all tools before employees use them for Partnership work, use them with Partnership information or use them on Partnership devices. Employees shall not use any tools that are not approved or use approved tools for prohibited uses as identified in the Partnership’s Guidelines for AI Use. As AI tools continue to evolve, the Guidelines for AI Use will change to reflect technological advancements, legal developments and best practices. 

Our guidelines for AI use

  • Outlines prohibited uses, including restrictions on using AI in ways that automate decision-making, expose confidential information or compromise the integrity of our projects, products or people. 
  • Offers considerations and best practices for transparency, accuracy, team collaboration and workflow integration. 
  • Prioritizes and prescribes staff training, including asynchronous online courses, team- and project-based consultations and AI office hours with our Sr. Manager of AI Strategy & Innovation.
