Launching the inaugural cohort of AI interns for the state of Maryland July 31, 2025 This summer, the Partnership for Public Service’s Future Leaders in Public Service Internship Program placed current graduate and undergraduate students with the state of Maryland, creating the state’s first artificial intelligence intern cohort. Seventeen full-time student interns are now positioned in paid roles focused on using AI to better improve public service delivery across the state. This Future Leaders cohort will help build a critical pipeline of young talent within Maryland government agencies, while giving students the opportunity to gain experience in technology-focused policy, program management and data analysis. Throughout the summer, interns will also participate in professional development sessions provided by the Partnership, introducing them to careers in public service that incorporate AI and to guest speakers who actively work in government. The cohort includes top undergraduate and graduate students in both technical and social science programs from 13 universities nationwide. A new chapter for the Partnership’s Future Leaders Since 2022, the Partnership’s Future Leaders in Public Service Internship Program has provided more than 600 undergraduate and graduate students the opportunity to gain professional experience in the federal government through full-time paid internships in federal agencies across seven career tracks. Interns in the public interest technology and AI career track include students from both technical and social science backgrounds, and candidates must be interested in innovation and harnessing the full potential of technology for the public good. Summer 2025 marks the first time the program is available for state agencies, and Maryland is the first state to participate. The program is funded by Google.org– the company’s philanthropy – and Microsoft in conjunction with the Partnership’s AI Center for Government. Hosting agencies include: Maryland Department of Budget and Management Maryland Department of Commerce Maryland Department of Disabilities Maryland Department of Education Maryland Department of the Environment Maryland Department of Information Technology Maryland Department of Public Safety & Correctional Services Maryland Department of Veterans and Military Families Maryland Military Department Maryland Prescription Drug Affordability Board Maryland Public Television “There is a greater need now more than ever before for young talent across levels of government to help meet the demands of our fast-paced, technology-driven world,” said Max Stier, president and CEO of the Partnership for Public Service. “We’re excited to bring the success of our Future Leaders in Public Service Internship Program to Maryland, and we’re looking forward to seeing how this cohort leverages AI and other emerging technologies to enhance these agencies’ services for the public.” Learn more During the past 24 years, the nonpartisan, nonprofit Partnership for Public Service has been dedicated to building a better government and a stronger democracy.
