FedSupport Resource: How can AI support your job search? May 1, 2025 Our Partnership for Public Service FedSupport webinars are surfacing an important question: How can generative artificial intelligence tools be responsibly used to support current, former or prospective civil servants during their job search? 1. Using AI to find jobs Job seekers can use AI tools to explore roles, agencies and job titles. Enter your skills, experience, education or certifications, and ask for roles you might be qualified for. AI can surface job titles you may not have considered. Key tip: Be aware that information can be false, outdated or incorrect. Do additional research to ensure the information you are using from AI-generated content is correct. 2. Using AI to interpret job postings Job seekers can use generative AI tools to identify requirements and top skills. Paste a job description into the tool and ask which skills are emphasized. This can help you prioritize language in your resume or cover letter. Key tip: Be sure to verify any output, summary or prioritization generated by AI. Although generative AI tools may help you find patterns in job postings that suggest which skills to emphasize, you will need to use your judgment to evaluate the tool’s output. 3. Using AI to prepare materials Job seekers should think of AI as a drafting partner, not a final editor. It can help you brainstorm how to highlight specific experiences, reformat your resume, reframe your skills or tailor materials to a job description. You are accountable for what you submit. Career advisors stress that it is important to submit materials like resumes, cover letters and other written deliverables in your own voice. You are ultimately responsible for any documents you submit on your behalf. Key tip: AI is a starting point—not a substitute. Avoid asking AI to write your entire letter or resume. Reviewers often spot near-identical submissions. Instead, request a few starting sentences or ideas for how to express your qualifications. Use the suggestions as a springboard, then revise and refine to reflect your authentic experience. 4. Using AI to prepare for interviews or networking AI could help interviewees prepare and practice. Prompt generative AI to provide likely interview questions based on a job description, then reflect on how you would respond. If you are unsure how to answer a specific type of question, AI can provide ideas—but make sure your responses feel genuine and are aligned with your voice and personal experience. You might also use generative AI to craft an elevator pitch. Input your goals and background to generate a short introduction for networking events, informational interviews or job fairs. Key tip: If you find yourself stuck while on your career seekers journey, AI can be a helpful place to get unstuck. You can use it to gather ideas and inspiration—but make sure you are the one driving the process. Important Considerations Respect employer policies. Certain agencies or roles may have specific policies on the use of AI tools. Always check the job posting and the organization’s website. Protect your privacy. Do not input sensitive personal or identifying information into any AI tool. Verify accuracy. AI can be helpful, but it is not always accurate or up to date. Always double check facts and suggested phrasing. Watch for distortions. AI systems are trained on human-created data and can reflect or amplify certain perspectives. Use your own judgment and values to guide final decisions. While AI can help you overcome writer’s block or kick-start a draft, human support remains essential.
